Our
Boats:
Project Amazonas owns and maintains
several boats for use by medical, educational, and research
groups. When not otherwise in use, these boats are also
available for charter, with income supporting Project Amazonas
activitis. Two large hardwood river boats, the M/N Tucunare
and the B/F Esperanza, are equipped with 12 and 8 bunks,
respectively, and are used for long trips and for transporting
large groups (up to 25 people) during day trips. A 26' covered
aluminum speedboat with 115 hp marine outboard motor (the
Mai-Kai Express) and 24' open aluminum skiff (the Shiripira)
are used for small groups and for exploration of local waterways.
The Mai-Kai also provides emergency evacuation capability.
A wooden skiff, dugout canoes, and resin kayaks complete
the 'fleet'.
The Tucunare and Esperanza are constructed
in the traditional pamacari-style common to passenger boats
in the Peruvian Amazon, Partially-covered observation decks
are great places to relax and sightsee. Below decks, there
is a dining and lounge area, a separate screened berth area
with privacy curtains, the motor room, restroom facilities,
and fully equipped kitchen. (ADD IN CLICKABLE PICTURES)
Safety & Maintenance:
Our vessels are fully and legally registered
and insured with Peruvian naval and civil authorities, and undergo
annual safety inspection. The boat crews are completely licensed
and have taken boat operation, safety, and maintenance courses.
We oversee regular maintenance of all vessels and motors, and
the safety of passengers and of our vessels is of utmost importance.
Our boat captains and small-boat operators have many years of
experience in the Amazon, and are excellent judges of the rivers
and skies.
